Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCE97AlettesDuring the last of the fall term the basketball
season opened with a rush with the first game
with Merom College, the score at the final blast of
the whistle being 57-12 in favor of Normal. Eleven
Normal candidates were given a chance to play
during this game, but Merom could do nothing
against the teachers either on offense or defense.
The game was refereed by Lefty Gilbert in
splendid style.Following this game came the game with Dan¬
ville Normal. This proved to be another over¬
whelming victory for the Indiana State Normal.
At the end of the first half the score was only 16-
14 in our favor, but at the beginning of the second
period the line up was changed and soon the goals
were being made with regularity by the wearers
of the blue and white. The score at the end
stood 48-19 Normal.Flushed with the easy victory the varsity squad
stacked up against the alumni and again won. The
game was interesting from the start and the
corks of the old men were blown quite often, to
the amusement of the crowd. Wood, coach of
last years state high school champions at Win-
gate, was rendered unconscious during the game,
but after a few minutes rest pluckily re-entered
the game. Manager Schockel, of the grads, should
be congratulated upon his work in organizing the
contest, for to him belongs much of the credit
for the success of the event. The next and last game of the term was with
Vincennes Y. M. C. A. at Vincennes. Here the
strongest squad yet encountered was found and
the game was a fight from start to finish. The
Y. M. C. A. bunch was composed of star college
players from both Indiana and Illinois, and the
best efforts of our men were required to win and
leave the final score 37-32 in our favor. The first contest after the holidays was held at
Charleston with the strong Eastern Illinois StateNormal team. It was an off night and a well
drilled team to oppose and at the end of the first
half the score stood 12-10 in favor of the Suck¬
ers. An effort was made to rally during the last
half, but our men could not get together, and at
the last the score stood 29-17 against us.With but two days notice a game was scheduled
with Purdue University to be played at Lafayette.
Through the kindness of Director Hoffman, of the
local Y. M. C. A., we were permitted to practice
on their floor in preparation for this contest. The
team left Saturday morning, January 10, for La¬
fayette. Much confidence was expressed that they
would make a creditable showing in playing a
school whose teams are known all over the United
States, and the results were past the fondest
hopes of the teachers. Normal held Purdue to a
42-23 score, putting up a strong defensive article
of basket ball against the Boilermakers. Clark
held Oliphant without letting him score from the
field, while Schenck and Knauth covered the floor
in splendid style.Lineup and summary:
