94THE NORMAL ADVANCE3Jtem£ of interestINTER-SOCIETY DEBATE.Somewhere in the background there are six
men pouring over books and magazines preparing
ammunition to be expended on the night of Jan¬
uary the thirty-first, for on that evening we shall
enjoy a rare treat, a debate on a subject of vital
interest to every one of us. The question to be
debated is:Should minimum rates of wages be fixed by
state authority? This subject is being investigated by commis¬
sions of the government it is being examined by many of our great economists, historians, and statisticians. It is being debated all over the United States. It is one of the great questions considered by the whole world. Some of the worlds decisions are favorable others are ad¬ verse.Do you know what the opinions of the world are? Do you know on what grounds these opin¬ ions are based? If you do, your interest is al¬ ready so intense that not even Mondays lessons, no, not even a date will keep you away. You will do your lessons some other time and bring your date to Normal Hall at eight oclock on Saturday evening, January 31, 1914. If you do not know these things, come. We promise you will learn as much of the real live world in two hours as you can learn in your classes in a whole week. Come, friends, both students and faculty, and hear what six men can say in two short hours. This debate will be well handled, we know. Four of the men have twice been on varsity de¬ bating teams. They have helped win debates from the best men of Illinois and Wisconsin. And the other two men have had experience ■ in other schools. For the debate, the affirmative will be supported by the Daedalian Literary Society, whose team is composed of the Messrs. W. W. Wright, H. E.Stork, and E. J. Hemmer. The negative of the question will be maintained by the Ciceronian De¬ bating Society. The team representing this so¬ ciety is W. L. Connor, Oscar F. Koch, and Will¬ iam Grose. Come, fellow-student, and boost your favorite, be it the Red and White, or be it the Purple and White. Come, and see the triumph of your friends. On the fourth Friday in April our varsity teams will support the affirmative of this proposition against Illinois, and the negative against Wiscon¬ sin. Last year we won unanimously from both these schools. This year, with your help, kindly criticism, and encouragement, we shall again bring home the championship. Be present on the last day of this month and see what are our excellent prospects for two successes in April.Come!Be loyal to yourself !!Be loyal to your friends !!!Be loyal to your school!!!!Be loyal to your country !!!!!Come!!!!!!ANNO UNO EM E NT.
