Description: |
Letter to Eugene V. Debs, 10/21/1921. Writes that he has spent the past several weeks talking and traveling through the United States and Mexico. Says that everywhere he goes he finds people who are great admirers of Eugene V. Debs and want to see him released from prison. Assures Eugene V. Debs that when he does finally get out of prison he will have the largest personal following of anyone in the radical movement of the United States. Remarks that Eugene V. Debs is probably very familiar with the way the movement has split and dwindled, resulting in a Socialist Party with only 8,000 members, a Socialist Labor Party with only 3,000 members, and an Industrial Workers of the World with a very uncertain membership. Informs Eugene V. Debs that in every community he visits there are young men and women ready to join a movement. Says that with the right move, tens of thousands of people will fall into place. Mentions that Eugene V. Debss actions once he gets out of prison will determine where many of these people will go. Includes a note from Eugene V. Debs to Theodore Debs saying that Scott Nearing wrote his letter from Mexico and so Theodore Debs should not bothering answering it. Tells Theodore Debs that Nearing is a fine, loyal comrade and leader who is just heart-sick over the factionalism in the American socialist movement. |
