Description: Copy of letter from Marguerite Debs Cooper, 07/09/1947. Writes that she was sorry to learn that it was because of a cold that Stone was unable to stop off in Terre Haute, Indiana. Assures Stone that she is happy that his publishers are enthusiastic about ADVERSARY IN THE HOUSE. Remarks that although she is not enthusiastic about the title that she is sure that it will appeal to the American people. Assures Stone that she and Gertrude Debs will be deeply touched by Stones portrayal of the relationship between Eugene V. Debs and Theodore Debs based upon everything that Stone has said about it. Says that she wonders what Eugene V. Debs and Theodore Debs reaction to the book would have been if still alive. Remarks that after looking at the advance synopsis of the book that she and Gertrude Debs are skeptical about some of the fictional elements of it. Says that neither she nor Gertrude Debs ever heard of the name Gloria Weston or her husband, Ned Harkness. Mentions that the only woman Eugene V. Debs ever had in his life was Katherine Debs. Expresses the hope that she is not deluged with questions because of the liberties Stone has taken in his book. Writes that Eugene V. Debs house is up for sale again. Says that the house will probably be turned into a boarding house. Says that it is unlikely that the city of Terre Haute, Indiana will buy the house.
