Description: |
Joe Airola, like many others, immigrated to Clinton to work in the coal mines. Born in 1896 in Italy, he built airplanes in World War I before he came to this country. After working in the mines for 15 years, he started a business making sausages, until he stopped in 1970. Mr. Airola was instrumental in the establishment of the immigrant square at Ninth and Pike streets in Clinton, Indiana. Keith Ludden recorded his memories of Clinton, the coal mines and the salami business. |
