This collection, which dates from 1937 to 1999, consists ofphotographic negatives, evidencing images created for articles published in the newspaper. Thecollection documents 20th century history of South Bend, St. Joseph County and, to a lesserextent, surrounding counties.The collection consists primarily of photographic negatives created by the South Bend Tribunewhich are arranged by business office and function. Newspaper photographers captured imagesrelevant to news stories about South Bend and St. Joseph County along with some coverage ofsurrounding communities in southern Michigan and adjacent Indiana counties. The negativeswere stored in labeled envelopes along with news clippings for future reference by staff of theSouth Bend Tribune. The collection holds negatives and transparencies in various sizes andformats, including 5x7, 4x5, 120-format, and 35mm.The main South Bend office files include subseries arranged by subject then chronology.Additionally there are subseries from the Mishawaka office and the affiliated radio and televisionstations, both arranged primarily chronologically. Nearly all of the materials in the collection werecreated by the South Bend Tribune. There is only one small section that likely includes somestock photographs supplied by outside image services for Michiana Magazine. These are notclearly identified.1St. Joseph County Public Library, South Bend Tribune Photographs CollectionThe collection was subject to theft and misplacement by South Bend Tribune employees overthe years. Many items were also removed when a portion of the collection temporarily becamethe property of the History Museum around 1992. As a result, some major events have little orno coverage in the collection. The most notable of these gaps is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s visitto South Bend on October 18, 1963, of which there is no coverage in the collection. In manyinstances across the collection, the final image or images selected for printing from an event orphoto shoot are missing from the collection but other images from the same event or shoot arepresent.Administrative History: The South Bend Tribune was founded in 1872. It was owned by theMishawaka-based firm later known as Schurz Communications, Inc. from its founding. Thenewspaper was sold to Gatehouse Media, Inc. in November 2019. From about 1954-1989 theSouth Bend Tribune had a separate office in Mishawaka, which maintained its own photographicnegative files and organizational system.Organization and Provenance: The collection is broadly organized by office. South BendTribune staff arranged negatives and clippings related to a single story in sleeves with a title,either the headline or subject, and a date, either the publication or filing date. The files werearranged alphabetically by title in reverse chronological order in card file cabinets. Around 1992,at least 67 boxes of material, and possibly more than 75 boxes of material, were weeded fromthe collection and transferred to the History Museum of South Bend. The boxes remained therefor several years before being transferred back to the South Bend Tribune office after theHistory Museum declined to accession all of the materials. Due to the fragile nature of items in this collection,researchers are requested to use digitized items where they exist and may not have access tooriginal copies of items that have been digitized. Digital items can be accessed athttps://michianamemory.sjcpl.org.Conditions Governing Reproduction: License agreements with the South Bend Tribunerestrict how researchers may obtain copies of images. There may be a fee for images providedby the library, depending on the staff time and materials required to supply the images. Thelibrary may provide researchers with high-resolution watermarked images for personal use. The2St. Joseph County Public Library, South Bend Tribune Photographs Collectionwatermarked images may not be used for publication, including online, without prior writtenpermission of the South Bend Tribune. Watermark-free images may be supplied to researcherswith written permission from the South Bend Tribune. Researchers may use limited equipment(phone camera or microfilm readers) at the library to create their own copies for personal use,but may not publish the images without permission from the South Bend Tribune. Scanners,photocopiers, and professional photography equipment may not be used by researchers toduplicate materials in the collection.Conditions Governing Use: This collection remains under copyright by the South BendTribune who reserves all rights for publication and reuse, except uses permitted by U.S. law.The library cannot grant permission to publish items from this collection. To request permissionfor publication, please contact the South Bend Tribune Editor at aachkar@sbtinfo.com.Custodial History: This collection was acquired as a donation from the South Bend Tribune onMay 20, 2019. At the time of the donation the editor of the South Bend Tribune was Alan Achkarand the newspaper was owned by Gatehouse Media, Inc. The materials were delivered in theiroriginal 23 filing cabinets and 67 boxes.Accruals: No further accruals are expected.Processing Note: The collection was processed by Local & Family History staff under thedirection of Local & Family History Librarian, Ellen Anderson. The original arrangement of thematerials was maintained but the materials were redistributed among containers in the sameseries for preservation purposes. Materials originally housed in cardboard boxes and somecabinets were transferred to acid and lignin-free boxes. Some of the negatives and clippingswere transferred to acid and lignin-free sleeves.
