South Bend Equality, Petition for Other Area Residents, ca. 2006

Description: Petition from South Bend Equality encouraging people to sign to help amend South Bend Human Rights Ordinance to include language that would protect LGBTQ citizens from discrimination.
PETITION for Other Area ResidentsA New Movement For Equality in South BendIn our desire for South Bend to become a 21st Century City, a new organization, South Bend Equality (SBE), has been formed to create equal protection under the law for all Hoosiers regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. Did you know that it is currently legal for an employer to fire an employee because she/he is gay, for a landlord to refuse to rent to a transgendered person, and for the city to restrict access to public accommodations based upon sexual orientation? The goal of South Bend Equality is to amend the city’s anti-discrimination ordinance to include sexual orientation and gender identity in order to stop the kinds of discrimination mentioned above. We urge our city council members to amend the current ordinance 5619-73 to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
