The Barn Raising

Description: This painting depicts a barn being built by a large community on a farm. The roof is being finished in the painting. This painting looks to be set in the summer as there are flowers and green grass everywhere. In the yard below the barn, women stand by a table of food watching the men work on the roof. The food looks like it has yet to be eaten meaning that it is still early in the day. A basin of water stands near the table so that the men can wash their hands after working on the barn before lunch. A group of older men sit on the lawn in chairs watching the men work from a distance. Near the left side of the barn, a pile of lumber for the barn sits in the yard with five men standing behind it. In the middle of the yard, a flower bed of red, green, purple, and yellow flowers grows. Besides the stone areas of the barn, all of the wood is lighter meaning that most of the barn is made of the new wood. Three men sit on the lower roof of the barn. There are 42 men on the roof working to apply the silver sheet metal to the already built rafters of the roof. Below the barn along the white fence next to it, many buggies are tied waiting to go home. The only other buildings in the painting are the two other barns in the left edge of the painting and a small barn that can be seen behind the one being built by the community. The title of the painting, The Barn Raising, is in the center of the bottom edge of the painting in black. Schrocks signature is in the bottom right corner in black.
