| Description: |
Handwritten on the postcard is Home of the Royal Furnace. Men stand outside the building, which features a large painted sign for James P. Carroll Tin & Furnace Work. Postmarked October 3, 1910.James Perry Carroll (1867-1932) operated his furnace and tin shop out of the brick building, located on the southeast corner of East 10th and Broadway Streets (931-933 Broadway Street). In 1911, the Indianapolis Star reported that the Red Cross Dairy Association paid $10,000 for the two-story brick block, then occupied by businesses on the ground level and upstairs apartments. They planned to remodel and use it as a milk distribution station. In 1915, it appears that this building was replaced by the Huggler Apartments, flats owned by Lilla Bell (Hoover) Huggler. In the 1970s, the building was razed. As of 2020, the corner is home to a house built in 1996 in the Chatham Arch Historic District. |
