Alverna Retreat House, Indianapolis, Indiana, circa 1950

Description: Aerial view of the estate once known as Four Winds. According to local newspaper accounts, the three-story turret home was built in 1933 by Indianapolis businessman Hugh McKennan using local architects Edward D. Pierre and George Caleb Wright. Built in a French chateau style, the home was originally known as Four Winds and included living quarters for a chauffeur, gardener and groundskeeper. When Landon died at Four Winds in 1947, the home and staff quarters were purchased by the Franciscan Province of Sacred Heart and renamed Alverna Retreat House. Since the 1990s, the house has once again been a private residence.
