Rev. Thomas and Sarah Lynch 50th anniversary, Grace Methodist Church, Indianapolis, Indiana, September 5, 1882

Description: A couple and two men sit on a church platform decorated with many plants and flowers and the years 1832 and 1882. Painted on the wall is Blessed are they that dwell in thy house. Psalm 84-4. Printed on the back of the mount is an ornate Anglo-Japanese backmark for Cadwallader. Dated September 5, 1882, negative no. 11564.A Happy Golden Wedding, The Indianapolis News, September 5, 1882, p. 3 reported that this was the golden anniversary of Reverend Thomas Hasket Lynch (1808-1892) and his wife Sarah Ann Davis (1812-1896) who were married in Augusta, Kentucky. A dinner and ceremony was held at the home of William F. Mason last evening. Later in the evening, the bride and groom were introduced to the congregation of the Grace M. E. church, of which Mr. Lynch is pastor, and a wedding cake in which were imbedded gold coins, forming the initials Mr. and Mrs. T. H. L., and amounting to the sum of seventy dollars, was presented on behalf of the congregation by Elder [John Kerr] Pye. Appropriate remarks were made by Gov. [Albert G.] Porter and Prof. S. [Stephen] K. Hoshour.The wood frame Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, dedicated in 1869, was located on the northeast corner North East and East Market Streets. The churched merged with the Roberts Park Methodist Episcopal Church and the last service was held in June 1925. By 1941 the building had been demolished and a gas station was on the lot.
