Westfield, Ind.
The Beyer brothers were first attracted to this area because of its artesian springs. Their business involved purchasing commodities such as eggs and butters from small farmers, consolidating the products and then ship them to buyers on the east coast. They needed to store the produce for short periods of time before shipping. Mechanical refrigeration, as we know it, did not exist. Artestian spring water came out of the ground between 40 and 50 degrees, and thus would work as natural refrigeration. Much of the Beyers effort was to use this natural refrigeration to ehance the value of their products.
