Newspaper items and a written account of the 1838 fire and efforts to rebuild.

Description: A meeting of the Trustees & other friends of the College was held the evening after the fire, at which it was resolved to call a meeting of the citizens on Monday evening following. A spirited meeting was held in the Court House & citizens said Rebuild! Rebuild. On the next day the work was commenced under the superintendence of Thos. H. Hastings. Mr. James Hanna acted as financial agent to collect funds assist in making contract for lumber etc. Temporary agencies were performed by Rev. Rev. Messrs S.G. Lowry, Jas. Thomson, Profs. J.S. Thomson & E.O. Hovey. Several voluntary donations were sent in from abroad & the work of the repairs went on briskly. As many hands were employed as could be profitably kept at work & were paid off every Saturday night.The two upper stories of the Messrs Hannas large brick store were hired for the accommodation of students and recitations immediately resumed. The repairs were urged forward so that in one year the building was so far completed as to allow two divisions to be occupied at the beginning of the term. Sept. 1839.
