Description: |
Pittsfield, Sep. 28, 1868.Rev. E.O. Hovey, D.D.Crawfordsville (Ind.)Dear sir,Samuel Stone was a plain, Christian farmer who lived & died at Townsend (Mass.). Wishing to do good with his hard-earned property, and trusting his own judgment, he left it for myself & one or two more, I forget which, to distribute it (I think 1 other trustee was 1 Rev. Geo. Fisher of Harvard (Mass.)). We gave of this legacy about $500 or $1000 to some nine or ten colleges, seminaries & societies which, at 1 time, seemed to be struggling to get into life or to retain life if already in. I do not remember 1 sum total, perhaps $10,000. I have always been thankful for 1 special agency I had is sending 1 small stream upon your water wheel. Yours truly, Jno. Todd. |
