Construction of the Butler Bowl

Description: Construction work is underway on the seats in the Butler Bowl (later renamed the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl). Construction on the athletic complex started in 1927 while the University was still located in Irvington. Originally, the Butler Bowl was built to accommodate approximately 35,000 fans with plans to add additional seating at a later date, if needed, for a total of more than 70,000 seats. An article in the September 19, 1928, issue of The Butler Collegian stated that the seat-boards were being installed as well as a concrete walkway around the top of the stadium. The first Butler University football game was played in the Butler Bowl on October 13, 1928, against Franklin College. Eight thousand fans watched the Bulldogs defeat Franklin with a final score of 55-0.
