Description: |
Likely taken from the roof of Jordan Hall, this photograph shows Butler Universitys South Mall. The Star Fountain is located where the sidewalks intersect. In 1991, both parking spaces and Clarendon Road were removed from the South Mall and landscaping was added. Ron Howe was the landscape architect for the space. The change was made in an effort to make the space pedestrian friendly, increase the aesthetics of campus, and to encourage socialization within the space. In addition to the new landscaping, additions were made to the storm sewer system, and lighting and an irrigation system were added. The 1991 issue of the Drift, Butler Universitys yearbook, states that the decision to remove parking from the South Mall and turn it into a landscaped, pedestrian mall, was met with controversy (pp. 6-8). However, today, large numbers of Butler students, faculty, and staff take advantage of the space during good weather. The buildings in the background are Irwin Library (left), Residential College (middle), and the Sigma Chi Fraternity House (right). |
