Looking south from the top of the Pharmacy Building

Description: Taken from the roof of the Pharmacy Building, this photograph shows work being conducted on Butler Universitys South Mall. During the project the parking spaces that had previously lined the perimeter of the mall were removed and replaced with sidewalks and landscaping. The buildings from left to right are Irwin Library, Residential College (ResCo), and Jordan Hall. The land on and around campus had always had poor drainage and in his book Butler University: a Sesquicentennial History, George M. Waller writes the following about the project. Almost the entire mall between Irwin Library on the east and Jordan Hall and Atherton on the west had to be excavated. For a time, this space became a small lake. A large-diameter conduit was installed underground to carry surface water under the canal and discharge it into the White River. Amused onlookers then witnessed a second excavation of the same area for installation of utility lines that serve University buildings. Only then could the landscaping begin, transforming the central mall into a place of beauty.
