Description: |
This photograph shows an athletic event taking place on Irwin Field in Irvington. Constructed in 1905, the athletic complex consisted of a football field, stands for 2,500 people, and a quarter-mile running track. After World War I, football proved to be so popular that additional stands were added, which could accommodate almost 10,000 fans. For some home games this capacity was not enough and fans would sit on rooftops, on top of cars, or in trees, in order to see the game. In the background of the photograph, Burgess Hall can be seen on the left and the Main Building can be seen on the right. The chimney for the combined gymnasium and Engine House is visible between the other two buildings. |
