Indianapolis Science Building Fund Special Gifts Committee

Description: Volunteers from the Indianapolis Science Building Fund Special Gifts Committee select pledge cards at a training session. This was one of several alumni committees formed in Indiana cities and counties with large numbers of Butler University alumni. Training sessions were held to teach alumni volunteers solicitation techniques and at each meeting, Butler University President Dr. Alexander E. Jones presented a slide show and discussed the University and its future plans. The ultimate goal of the capital funds campaign was to raise $21.8 million for improvements to campus facilities and to plan for an expected increase in student enrollment. At the time, it was the largest capital funds campaign in University history. The first part of the campaign, the Science Building Fund, was devised to raise $6,125,000 for the construction of a science building to replace the outdated science labs and classrooms in Jordan Hall, which opened in 1928. A series of committees organized trustees, administrators, faculty and staff, alumni, and others in this fund drive. Launched in 1968, the initial goal of the campaign was successful and by October 1970, enough money had been raised to pay for the science building. Dorothy and Edward Gallahue donated more than $1 million towards the buildings construction, so when the structure opened in 1973, it was named the Dorothy and Edward Gallahue Science Hall in their honor. The relocation of the science departments freed up 40,000 square feet of space in Jordan Hall for use by other departments. Additional funds from the campaign were to be used to remodel this space, expand the dormitories on campus, and to increase endowment funds for scholarships and professorships, among other projects. There are cropping marks on the left side of the photo and the handwritten text at the bottom corresponds to its location in the Fall 1969 issue of the Science Building Fund Reporter.
