Otto N. Frenzel Sr. stands near several tables of seated people at a capital funds campaign meeting

Description: Otto N. Frenzel Sr., Butler University Trustee and Chair of the University Development Council, stands next to several tables of seated people at a major gifts report meeting at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. From left to right the people seated at the table closest to Frenzel include James A. Gloin (napkin at mouth) (Class of 1923, M.A. 1925), University Trustee, Chair of the Campaign Executive Committee, and Co-Chair of the Major Gifts Committee; Frank J. Hoke, University Trustee, National Campaign Chair, and Co-Chair of the Major Gifts Committee; and Dr. Alexander E. Jones, University President. Held in 1969, this meeting was part of a 10-year capital funds campaign. The goal was to raise $21.8 million for improvements to campus facilities and to plan for an expected increase in student enrollment. At the time, it was the largest capital funds campaign in Butler University history. The first goal of the campaign was to raise $6,125,000 for the construction of a science building to replace the outdated science labs and classrooms in Jordan Hall, which opened in 1928. Additional funds from the campaign were to be used to expand the dormitories on campus, and increase endowment funds for scholarships and professorships, among other projects. A series of committees organized trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, alumni, and others in this fundraising campaign. Launched in 1968, the initial goal of the campaign was successful and by October 1970, enough money had been raised to pay for the science building. Dorothy and Edward Gallahue donated more than $1 million towards the buildings construction, so when the structure opened in 1973, it was named the Dorothy and Edward Gallahue Science Hall in their honor.
