Exterior view of the former Butler University Phi Delta Theta House, later the Delta Sigma Phi House, in Irvington

Description: This Irvington home was originally built in 1909 to house Butler Universitys Phi Delta Theta, Indiana Gamma Chapter. It was purchased in 1923 by Butler Universitys Delta Sigma Phi, who inhabited the house until the Universitys move to the current Fairview Campus in 1928. Delta Sigma Phi was one of several local fraternities developed at Butler University in the 1920s, in an effort to give more of the first-year students at the growing institution an opportunity to join a fraternity. According to the 1945 Drift, Butler Universitys yearbook, the organization was founded on January 11, 1923, with a desire to petition Sigma Nu for affiliation. Surprisingly, the 1925 Drift lists the group as Delta Phi Sigma, but apparently their petition was successful, as the organization was installed at Butler as Sigma Nu, Epsilon Mu Chapter, on May 6, 1926.
