The Pharmacy Building as viewed from the southwest

Description: As viewed from the southwest side of the building, several cars are parked in front of the Pharmacy Building. In 1945, Butler University merged with the Indianapolis College of Pharmacy, forming the Butler University College of Pharmacy, but classes continued to be offered in the former organizations building at 800 East Market Street in Indianapolis. The College of Pharmacy Finance Committee was formed to raise money for a new building on the Universitys campus and by October 1949, more than $600,000 of the estimated $700,000 needed to construct the building had been raised from 619 individual and corporate donors. The remaining assets from the former Indianapolis College of Pharmacy were also used to pay for the construction. The architectural firm Robert Frost Daggett and Associates designed the Pharmacy Building to resemble the style of Jordan Hall and the Service Construction Company served as the general contractor. A ground breaking ceremony for the new building was held on the site on October 18, 1949, and the building was dedicated on May 7, 1952. When the four story limestone building opened (basement and three above-ground levels), it included a green house, air conditioned animal rooms, and 10 laboratories, 6 of which were reserved for faculty research. The name of the College was changed to the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 1995.
