Josie Orr and Rudolf Nureyev clink glasses for a toast during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala champagne dinner

Description: Indiana First Lady Joanne (Josie) Wallace Orr (left) and Rudolf Nureyev (right) clink glasses for a toast while seated at a table during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala champagne dinner. Other people sit or stand around additional tables in the background. Held in the Krannert Room in Clowes Memorial Hall, the formal dinner followed a performance by Rudolf Nureyev & Friends, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the building. During the evenings festivities, Nureyev received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Butler University. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes. The majority of the financing was made possible by his widow Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources.
