Description: From left to right, Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes Jr., Margaret (Peggy) Gracie Jackson Clowes, Allen Whitehill Clowes, and Indianapolis Mayor William H. Hudnut III stand in the Clowes Memorial Hall lobby during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala. The people standing behind them might be Butler University Executive Vice President Geoffrey Bannister, Lois Lee, and Butler University Board of Trustees Chair John (Jack) R. Lee. On the wall is a portrait of Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, painted by Pietro Pezzati. The gala consisted of a performance by Rudolf Nureyev & Friends, followed by a champagne dinner held in the Krannert Room. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of the father of Allen Clowes and Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes Jr., Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes. The majority of the financing was made possible by their mother, Edith Clowes, through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources.
