Description: |
An audience is assembling for the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala. The audience sits in their seats or stands in the aisles on the main floor and in the box seats and many people appear to be studying their programs. They are waiting for the start of a performance by Rudolf Nureyev & Friends. Besides Nureyev, performers included Carole Arbonnies, Fabienne Cerutti, Eric Camillo, Fanny Gaida, Marie Claude Pietragalla, Charles Jude, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and baritone Michael Shasberger. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes. The majority of the financing was made possible by his widow Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. |
