Indiana First Lady Joanne (Josie) Wallace Orr (left) and Indiana Governor Robert D. Orr (second from left) talk with Dr. Alexander (Alec) Whitehill Clowes (second from right) and an unknown person, while standing in the Clowes Memorial Hall lobby during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala. The gala consisted of a performance by Rudolf Nureyev & Friends, followed by a champagne dinner held in the Krannert Room. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of Dr. Alec Clowes grandfather, Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, and the majority of the financing was made possible by his grandmother, Edith Clowes, through the Clowes Foundation. Other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. |
