Butler University President John G. Johnson (right) speaks while standing on the Clowes Memorial Hall stage during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala. Allen Clowes (center) and Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes Jr. (left) also stand on the stage. Both were honored for their support of and generosity to Clowes Memorial Hall. The gala consisted of a performance by Rudolf Nureyev & Friends, followed by a champagne dinner held in the Krannert Room. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, the father of Allen Clowes and Dr. George H. A. Clowes Jr. The majority of the financing was made possible by their mother Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, and other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. |
