Description: |
From left to right, Margaret (Peggy) Gracie Jackson Clowes, Indiana Governor Robert D. Orr, Jane Johnson, and Butler University President John G. Johnson sit at a table during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala champagne dinner. Held in the Krannert Room in Clowes Memorial Hall, the formal dinner followed a performance by Rudolf Nureyev & Friends, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the building. A rose filled centerpiece adorns the table, since the rose is the official emblem of Clowes Memorial Hall. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot structure began on August 15, 1960, and the building officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes. The majority of the financing was made possible by his widow Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. |
