Description: |
Allen Whitehill Clowes (center) stands at the microphone during the Clowes Memorial Hall 25th Anniversary Gala champagne dinner, while Indiana Governor Robert D. Orr (left) and Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes Jr. (right) stand on either side. Blue cloths cover items on either side of the microphone and the Butler University seal hangs on the curtains along the wall in the background. Held in the Krannert Room in Clowes Memorial Hall, the formal dinner followed a performance by Rudolf Nureyev & Friends, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the building. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, the father of Allen Clowes and Dr. George H. A. Clowes Jr. The majority of the financing was made possible by their mother Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, and other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. |
