Description: |
A parking lot is located along the north and east sides of Clowes Memorial Hall. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, the approximately 83,444 square-foot building is constructed of reinforced concrete and limestone. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building officially opened on October 18, 1963. Constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, the majority of the financing was made possible by his widow, Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and other sources. However, the monetary gifts were for the building only, not for other amenities such as parking. In September 1963, just one month before the building was scheduled to open, it was announced that the city of Indianapolis had donated a section of land to the west of Sunset Avenue. This land, in combination with University owned land to the north of the building, was used for the construction of a parking lot with a 600 car capacity. Construction materials and engineering services were donated by Asphalt Surfacing Co. and Standard Materials Corp. and Baker & Daniels gifted $15,000 towards the completion of the parking lot. |
