Description: |
Cars are parked along both sides of the East Mall, outside of Clowes Memorial Hall. Designed by architects Evans Woollen III and John M. Johansen, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot building began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. At the time of construction, the building was unique since it was designed to host a variety of events including orchestra concerts, ballets, operas, lectures, and University events. Constructed of concrete and Indiana limestone, portions of the building are 90 feet high. A zoning variance was required as at the time of construction, buildings in the area were limited to a height of 50 feet. Taken in the same month that the building opened, the photographer was Dr. Alexander Whitehill Clowes, the grandson of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, in whose honor the building was constructed. |
