People walk towards the front entrance of Clowes Memorial Hall

Description: People walk towards the front entrance of Clowes Memorial Hall (right) and a car is parked in front of the building. Designed by architects Evans Woollen III and John M. Johansen, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot building began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. At the time of construction, the building was unique since it was designed to host a variety of events including orchestra concerts, ballets, operas, lectures, and University events. Constructed of concrete and Indiana limestone, portions of the building are up 90 feet high. A zoning variance was required as at the time of construction, as buildings in the area were limited to a height of 50 feet. A portion of Lilly Hall is visible to the left of Clowes Hall and there is handwriting at the bottom of the photograph.
