Waterfall in Holcomb Gardens

Description: This hand-built waterfall is part of the lake that was added to Holcomb Gardens in 1952. Sometimes referred to as a reflection pond, the body of water was a gift from J. I. Holcomb and was built in a natural ravine. According to Arthur F. Lindberg, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds during the construction of the lake, boulders were Mr. Holcombs favorite and after being examined closely in judging the size of the boulders, without equipment, by the way, a lot of labor was involved, installed these stones. . . . We gathered these stones from the quarry at Road 100 and the White River and there was an ample supply and they could be selected for size, color, and shape. J. I. and I would spend hours on a rock pile searching for boulders and then we hired a man by the name of Pott from Zionsville to pick these boulders up and move them to the Butler campus (1976, June, p. 5).
