Hedges in Holcomb Gardens

Description: A hedge forms a border to the left of a row of trees in Holcomb Gardens. To the right, some of the plants in the flower beds appear to be blooming. One report claims that there were approximately 1,100 taxus bushes planted on each side of the alley in order to create the hedges. According to Butler University Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, Arthur F. Lindberg, who helped to create the gardens, An amusing incident occurred at the time we were installing the hedge plants. We took some 500 of these hedge plants and they were moved in by huge semi-trucks and we began to plant them one by one to form the hedge and in the morning when we would ride down to continue our work we saw some of the hedge plants had been removed during the night. The same thing happened the following day and after discussing this with J. I. [Holcomb], he asked How many hedge plants have been stolen? and I said, about 15 to 20, and he said, How much do they cost? and I told him $2.50 apiece. When he asked how much it would cost to employ a watchman at a years salary, I told him that at that time, about $2,400 would do the job. He turned to me and said, Let them steal the plants (1976, June, p. 4).
