Color postcard of the Bona Thompson Library

Description: The Edward Thompson family moved from Edinburgh, Indiana to Irvington to send their daughter Bona to Butler University. After graduation in 1897, her parents gave her a European tour. During the trip, Bona became ill with typhoid fever. She survived the trip home, but died shortly thereafter. In her honor her parents donated land, and $40,000 to build a library for her alma mater. The architect for the building was Jesse Johnson of Dupont and Johnson, Indianapolis, and the contractor was William P. Jungclaus Company. Located at 5350 University Avenue, the library opened on January 11, 1904, and served the school until Butler moved to the Fairview campus in 1928. For years, the building stood vacant, until the United Christian Missionary Society purchased it in 1940. Today, the building is the headquarters of the Irvington Historical Society.
