Description: |
A speaker stands at a lectern in front of a construction sign, while Alumni Association President Jamene Phillippe (Class of 1973) shovels dirt, during the groundbreaking ceremony for an Atherton Union addition on Friday, October 9, 1992. An audience watches from their chairs while Student Government Association President Robert P. Benson (Class of 1993) (left) and Butler University Board of Trustees Chair Paul Schmidt, M.D. (right) stand near the front of the audience. Originally named the John Whistler Atherton Center, in honor of John W. Atherton (Class of 1900), who served for 26 years as the secretary-treasurer for the University, the building opened on January 3, 1950. However, four decades later, the administration of the University felt the building was not being used to its true potential. The building was updated and a 24,000 square-foot addition was constructed at the southern end of the building, which was renamed Atherton Union. Behind the sign piles of dirt, a portion of Schwitzer Hall is visible. |
