Sweeney Chapel

Description: Interior of Sweeney Chapel, located on the north side of the College of Religion Building. The 1942 Drift, Butler Universitys yearbook, describes the space as the beautiful Sweeney Chapel, which is named in honor of the former Rev. Z. T. Sweeney for his efforts on behalf of the establishment of the College of Religion (p. 14). Established in 1924, the College of Religion first opened for classes in 1925, offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. In 1958, it was incorporated as a separate entity known as the Christian Theological Seminary (CTS). When the organization moved to a new building in February 1966, the University purchased the building and this space was remodeled and renamed Robertson Chapel. Decorated in a colonial style, it served as a student chapel and first opened for services on Sunday, February 26, 1967. The space was renovated again in 2004, becoming the Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall.
