Description: |
The main building featured on this postcard is Jordan Hall, while the building below it is the C Club (sometimes called the Campus Club). Although the back of the postcard states that Butler University was founded in 1843, it was actually founded in 1855. When Jordan Hall opened on September 17, 1928, it was the only academic building on Butler Universitys Fairview campus and contained 54 classrooms, a science lecture hall that could seat 240 students, as well as other lecture halls for 150 to 200 students. Science laboratories were located in the central section of the building, which also featured a botanical conservatory, including a herbarium and greenhouse. The portion of the building that juts out, near the center of the building and the flowers, is the science lecture hall and the greenhouse is located above it. Built from 2,797 tons of Balfour pink granite and 2,500 tons of limestone, Jordan Hall was designed in the Collegiate Gothic architectural style by architects Robert Frost Daggett and Thomas Hibben. The general contractor was the Hegeman-Harris Company, which had built buildings for other universities including Yale, Harvard, and Columbia. The October, 1928, issue of The Butler Alumnal Quarterly describes the free standing C Club. The University cafeteria is now in operation in temporary quarters that have been built in the rear of the Jordan Building. The structure is a gray frame building, 50x100 feet, and will accommodated between three and four hundred students (p. 155). The C Club sold meals and snacks and offered students a place to gather and hold events until an electrical fire destroyed the building on November 16, 1947. |
