Masonry work in Jordan Hall

Description: A construction worker examines the masonry in Jordan Hall. The construction of Jordan Hall began in September 1926, and the building was constructed of reinforced concrete with brick infill on the exterior walls. Designed in the Collegiate Gothic architectural style by architects Robert Frost Daggett and Thomas Hibben, it has 2,797 tons of Balfour pink granite and 2,500 tons of limestone covering the exterior walls. The stone is purely decorative and does not support the building structurally. When Jordan Hall opened on September 17, 1928, it was the only academic building on Butler Universitys Fairview campus. The photograph was likely taken during one of the several Jordan Hall renovations that occurred between the late 1970s and the late 1980s. A three-phase renovation of the building, completed between 1977 and 1980, included a new roof; classroom, office, and restroom updates; new plumbing and fire sprinklers; new lighting and electrical wiring; and the addition of wheelchair lifts, among other projects. Another renovation occurred in the mid-1980s, when the ceiling heights were lowered in order to reduce heating and cooling costs, new drywall and insulation were added, new floor coverings were installed in hallways and classrooms to reduce noise, and ramps for handicapped access were added. A multi-year exterior renovation project began on June 29, 1987. During this project, tuckpointers replaced damaged stones and dug out one to ten inches of old mortar, replacing it with new mortar, using the same formula for the mix as what was used during the buildings construction.
