Description: |
This photograph, which shows people walking between Jordan Hall (background) and the Science Complex, was likely taken from the section where the Holcomb Building (left) and Gallahue Hall (right) intersect. When Jordan Hall opened on September 17, 1928, it was the only academic building on Butler Universitys Fairview campus. An article in the September 19, 1928, issue of The Butler Collegian titled Classes Start Student Trail to Jordan Hall states that Jordan Memorial hall, with accommodation for 2,200 students, contains fifty-four classrooms, a library, the offices of administration, the College of Religion, a science hall, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a botanical conservatory. The science department, which is located in the second unit of Jordan Memorial hall, is said to be one of the finest and best equipped departments in the state. The science lecture room will seat over 200 students (p. 1). Over time, the University outgrew Jordan Hall and the Holcomb Building and Gallahue Hall, which both opened in 1973, were built to increase the space available for science coursework. |
