Description: |
OUR SCHOOL IN WAR TIMEThe total war of this past year has not left The University School untouched. Its students, imbued from their earliest days with the Americanideals of freedom and democracy, have entered whole-heartedly into theirown War Program. Each of them is doing his own infinitesimal bit to makeour victory come more quickly, with a minimum of sacrifice. Surely allthese small efforts added together have helped, as similar efforts arehelping in American schools all over the country. In this War Program, physical fitness is of primary importance. A nation of strong, healthy, vital youth is the foundation upon which Americahopes to build our brighter, new tomorrow. A period of each day is devotedto developing the physical prowess of each student according to his needsand abilities. First aid, the significance of which we have now so fully appreciated, is required for one hour a week. With the advent of the worldconflict, we have realized also the value of mathematics and science to thestrategies of war. Every senior who does not show a certain proficiency inmathematics is required to take a refresher course in the fundamentals ofthat subject. Any student who shows a marked aptitude for science is urgedto take physics. In this way he may be better prepared to meet a world inwhich specialized training is a necessity. The students in all grades of The University School have willingly co-operated in buying war stamps, and in making successful the drives for rubberand metal scrap. In addition to its contribution to service rolls, The University School hasgone all-out in its endeavor to win the war and to add its bit in insuring forAmerica that honorable peace which is her goal.Page forty-six |
