JUNIOR H IGHGENERAL SCIENCEShades of Pasteur! Bacteria must be everywhere. They are inBill’s mouth, under Juanita’s fingernails, in our drinking water, in theair, and in every other place we look for them.We discover that although they are microscopic, they will grow sorapidly that colonies large enough to be easily seen will develop intwenty-four hours if we provide them with food and suitable living conditions. From a sample of air in our laboratory we grew more thantwenty large colonies in a single day. The movie we saw on bacteriaexplained how this rapid growth took place. The studious looks that you may observe on our faces are causedby the problem that we have of discovering which bacteria are harmful, which helpful, and why.SHOP“This mold is rammed too hard .... You’ll have to tin this solderingcopper first .... Use tool steel for that punch, not mild steel .... Thispattern won’t draw properly .... Toolkeeper, give me some 8d boxnails .... What’s an automatic crossfeed, anyway?”These and countless similar remarks may be heard daily in the industrial arts department—along with the sound of hammers and thewhirring of machinery—as about 125 of us from grades seven to twelveattempt to work out our problems in a very realistic way.As many as ten major industrial fields are represented in our “shop”,and there is never a single operation which is not fundamental to a particular industry or trade. In the metal-working fields, we gain experience in foundry, forge, sheetmetal, coldmetal, and machine shop work.In the woodworking fields, we learn something of cabinet-making,pattern-making, model-building, and wood finishing.Every job must be carefully planned before it is executed; thereforewe learn mechanical, architectural, sheet-metal, and electrical drawing. Many fine practical jobs have been produced this year. Probablythe most popular ones completed in the junior high school sections werea small riveting hammer, whatnots, book ends, and ash trays. |
