FIRST THROUGHSIXTH GRADESSIXTH GRADEIn connection with a special study of Christmas as celebrated throughout the world, we pupils of the sixth grade constructed the scene of thebirth of Christ as we imagined it. Here the committee in charge of decorations is putting finishing touches on the crib and adjusting the coloredlights. Notice especially the rolling hills, which we made by sprinklingdirt and artificial snow on muslin coated with flour-and-water paste. Weused colored cardboard to make the miniature city to the left of the hills.High above the housetops rises a church steeple blanketed in snow. Some of us are at our seats preparing special reports on the wayChristmas is celebrated in foreign lands. Reference books from the classroom library constitute the source of material. We who are interested instudying the same country work in a group so that we may have necessaryreference books within easy reach.FIFTH GRADEPioneersin the days of Daniel Boone! Here we fifth graders have all become pioneers. We have suppliedatmosphere by building a colonial room which any Daniel Boone wouldhave been proud to own.For furnishings, we reconstructed a Dutch oven, Dutch door, three-cornered cupboard, quill pens, some rude chairs, and a table. Some of our most interesting experiences during the second semesterwere connected with our unit of work on Mexico. We were divided intosix groups with a student teacher in charge of each. We improved aminiature adobe house with patio, built a market place, made a largeproduct map, assembled a Mexican dictionary, and colored a mural. Thisunit culminated in a program for our parents.Page eight |
