The team showed continually improving form and progressed rapidly asthe season moved along. This year proved to be a“building” year, as many of the varsity lettermenwill be back next year. Probably the best thingabout this year’s football season was the backing ofthe fans. The crowds came because they wantedto see a team that would fight from the beginningto the end.The 3-7 record does not indicate the close scoresof some of the games either. In three contests, last-minute drives were the downfall of the Univees.Bedford scored in the last 35 seconds to down theU-School crew, while last-minute scores by Auroraand Crispus Attucks meant defeat for the Univees. The U-School team made the most of every opportunity and by converging on their point-after-touchdown, they downed the Dugger Coalminers,7-6.The greatest of the Univees assets was the stiffdefense that they showed this year. In only threecontests did the opponents score more than 20points.Coach Walter Gray was honored at the fall sports’ banquetby being presented a “tin” cup.
