FIRST GRADETom is a boy. He has a cat,” is whatwe hear in the first and second grade room. They are working diligently to learn to read.Mrs. Young, their teacher, is like a motherto the children. Her patience and soft voicehelp to give the children confidence in themselves.Gerry Hacker:I like to bite off heads of wormsThe kind that wiggle, crawl and squirms;I chew their bodies up and eatThe dirty toes from off their feet.THIRD GRADE‘‘Four plus three equals seven.” “Igot my answer first.” These second andthird graders have had quite a time learning their addition and subtraction facts. They all seem to be in quite a strain. Mrs.Powers reassures them by saying, “Don’tworry too much about not knowing them sowell today. By next week everyone will beable to say his “100 addition facts” like aflash of lightning.”OUR YOUNG ROOSTEROne day I was out playing with Mary andJane. We heard a funny noise. We stoppedplaying and ran into the house. We shut thedoor. I ran to Mother and said that we heardsomething funny. I told her to come with meand she did. She opened the door and saidthat it was only our rooster trying to crow.Carolyn Sullivan, Third Grade.MINNOW SCHOOL.Little minnows swim in schools,Silver scholars of the pools. But no matter where I look,I can’t see a copybook,And although they’re very bright,Minnows never DO recite . . .So I think a minnow schoolIs just a place for keeping cool,And perhaps they’re only taughtHow to keep from getting caught.FOURTH GRADEThe chalk is screeching.’ We enjoy mostthe time when Mrs. Long lets us write onthe board. So far we haven’t quite masteredthe art of writing on the board without making our chalk sound like a “four alarm fire,”but if at first we don’t succeed, we’ll try, tryagain.43 |
