Description: Life with the Seniors of ’48 in the Year of 1968-ContinuedAfter the broadcast John dropped in at the “Charge In and CrawlOut’’ Restaurant, where a lady was washing dishes and trying to keep twobrats out of the sink. She turned and yelled, “Don, get in here and waiton this bum.’’ I poked my head from John’s pocket and found the lady wasEdna Galyan, who together with her husband, Don Myers, owned therestaurnat. When Edna was ready to make out John’s ticket, she couldn’tfind a pencil, so John fished me out of his pocket and gave me to her.Glancing at the clock, John found he had to dash for his bus; and I wasleft in the “Charge In and Crawl Out.’’ Then, true to the name of therestaurant, in charged Bill McClary, part owner of the McClary Brothers’Trucking Company, known all over the world for their speed but nevertheir dependability. Bill was “shooting the breeze’’ about his large loadof fertilizer, which was to be delivered to Don Wampler’s farm. Don hadjust become “The American Farmer of 1968’’. He won this by raising thetallest corn, one stalk being 30 feet in height. Before Bill left he told Ednaand Don that Ellen Robertson is designing dresses to support her worthless husband and two children.Don had just fallen asleep and Edna had resumed her tasks, whenMary Baugh and her fiance, Ray McLaughlin, came in to make arrangementsfor their wedding reception. Mary must not have had the hook very wellbaited to have required twenty years to make a successful catch. Ednaoffered me to them when they asked for a pencil. They wanted to buy me asa souvenir of Unionville, but Edna explained that I wasn’t hers in the firstplace and so gave me away. Then came the great day, the day of the wedding.Peeping from Ray’s breast pocket when they said, “I do”, I nearly poppedout of my skin for the minister was none other then Bob Barrow. I slippedout of Ray’s pocket when he dropped the ring and fumbled around on the floorto find it. Joyce Chitwood sang “Last Rose of Summer’’ at the weddingceremony. Afterward, Joyce received many congratulations on her singing.Among the guests I saw Opal Polley, Eva Wampler, Garnet Godsey, and LauraLou Ward. I lay in the aisle until the ceremony was over when Joyce noticedme and picked me up.Joyce was very happy to see her old classmates and invited them toa tea at her home that afternoon. The first one to arrive was Opal, who ismarried and ownes a skating rink at Terre Haute. Eva was accompaniedby her small son, Lester Junior, who is a holy terror. He found me and bitmy eraser off, the bad boy! Then he opened Laura’s purse, dumped all herthings out on the floor, and left it lying open with me half in, half out. Laurahas been attending Purdue University for the last eight years and hopes tofinish soon. The last guest to arrive was Garnet who had been detained byher husband. She was nearly in tears for her husband had bawled her out forbacking into the garage door in her hurry to get here. After a very happyreunion they all began to leave. Laura recovered her purse and pushed me in.She had to leave early to be back in time for a student council meeting. Shemade it in the nick of time. After the meeting she left me lying on the desk, and that is where my present owner found me. I am sure you will agree thatI’ve had a full life. I am happy to have found a permanent home where I canlive to a ripe old age even without my eraser.
