Description: Life with the Seniors of ’48 in the Year of 1968I am the Unionville pencil. You’ve all seen me around, I hope.I am here to tell you of my adventures and travels. My present owner is Vivian Galyan, professor of mathematicsat Purdue University. I was listening to my favorite radio program whenshe grabbed me and began figuring her Calculus. She seemed to be havingtrouble so she called in her secretary who immediately found the solution.Sometimes my life with the professor seems rather dull compared withsome of my former adventures. Let me tell you the story of my life.I was first owned by Charles Fleener, who has a jot-em-downstore in Unionville. While spending her vacation with her mother,Rebecca Boshears dropped in to chat with her old classmate, Charles. She bought me and took me back down to Kentucky where she and herhusband own a “Home For Old Race Horses.’’ Her nearest neighbor,Dale Stamper, is a tobacco farmer. Being a typical Kentucky mountaineer, Dale was not careful to have a broken fence mended when firstneeded. So while he was having his barn painted by one of his formerclassmates, Donald Brock, one of Rebecca’s horses kicked the ladderout from under Don. Rebecca ran to the phone and called an ambulance. When it arrived a few moments later, I noticed the name, William Mann,Undertaker, painted on the side. Before leaving Don asked for a pencilto write down Rebecca’s address. Afterward Don shoved me into hispocket. The next morning I fell out in the corridor of the hospital. I waslooking around and enjoying the pretty nurses when a darkhaired nursepicked me up. I caught my breath as I recognized Thelma White, who ismarried to Dr. Jarvis Hacker. Jarvis is a brain surgeon; and althoughoften successful, many of his patients become customers of Bill Mann whois located next door for quicker disposal. Thelma discovered that Ibelonged to Don so she returned me.I had no sooner become accustomed to life in the hospital than Iwas forced to start on my travels again. John Fleener came to visitDon. Don loaned me to John so he could sign the Hospital Register; andJohn, absent-minded as ever, stuck me in his pocket. John is now singingon the “Grand Ole Uproar,’’ sponsored by Myrt’s Corn Meal. He was onhis way to the radio station when he bumped into Dick Owens who lookedlike the “Lost Weekend’’. He had just lost his job with Spike Jones, becauseof the invention of an automatic page turner. After consoling Dick, Johncontinued on his way to the station. Just as he was about to go on the air,the broadcast was interrupted with the news flash--“We interrupt thisbroadcast to bring you a special bulletin from Greensburg where a greattragedy has just struck. It seems the caretaker’s wife, the former JoanRichardson, disposed of her dishwater by throwing it on the courthousetree. The tree is not expected to live.”
