*u*ietee*iNext I see crowds of men, women, and children. What are they doing? Oh, therein the background is the President’s mansion, the far famed White House. A beautiful woman is there greeting the people. That figure, that dark naturally wavy hair, those blue eyes, and that turned up nose, all look familiar. If I could just get acloser look at her, I believe I could tell who she is. She is coming closer now, andI see her plainer. It is my former star-history student, Joanne Richardson, grownolder, of course, but prettier than ever. The scene shifts and I see the famous East Room of the White House. The President is Thomas Hardy. He is that quiet senior of the class of 1446” who used to keepme up to all hours of the night so that I would not be called to account for my misquoting the history text. It makes me very happy to find that he is President. He can onlybe about thirty-seven years old, but I feel sure that he will prove to be a very capableofficial as well as the youngest president ever to be elected in the United States.Again the scene shifts and I see a man on a shoemaker’s bench, patching away ona shoe. How faithfully he is working, and what a fine job he is doing! I tell you, he issome patcher! Now he looks up and I see it is that always cheerful Jimmie Weddle.Well, I always knew that in whatever business he might engage, he would make it asuccess.Who will be next? Oh, here is someone: a gorgeously arrayed woman on a stage. What can she be doing? Making a speech on woman’s rights, campaigning for Congressselling a new sweet-scented bath powder, or auctioneering a pie-supper? I don t believe she is doing any of these things, because she opens her mouth far too wide forthat and keeps it open far too long. Ah, I see musicians near her! She is indeed a famous singer,. It is no less a person than Bonnie Wilber. Who would suppose that shecould ever open her mouth as wide as that? As I remember her, she could hardly openit wide enough to recite her lessons. What changes time will bring!Next I see a fairy-like toe dancer. That must be Mary Bell, for she used to be so |
