Description: Coal City furnished the opposition on January 14, 1955 in the local goal house, putting up ahard fight only to lose to the Quarry Lads 59-52. This game marked the 3rd.win in the last fouroutings for the improved Quarry Lads. Stewart and Purcell again led the attack with 18 and 20points respectively.The Tir-County tdurney, held at Martinsville, was one of the better tourneys in recent yearswith Morgantown winning over Smithville in the final game.The Quarry Lads played Smithville in one of the high scoring games of the tourney, with theSmithville Skibos winning 79 to 68. The highlight of the game was John Stewarts 31 point performance which was 3 points short of the tourney record. This was Johns last game because ofgraduation January 21.The Quarry Lads, without the services of the high scoring Stewart, playing host to the highlyrated Solsberry Hornets on February 3. The Lads played their best game of the year, in a comebackperformance, to win a close 45 to 43 contest. The victory was a team victory with no outstandinghigh scorer.The Quarry Lads traveled to Unionville on February 4, 1955 to play the once beaten UnionvilleArrows. The Lads employed a stall the first half and thenunleased a fast break the second half but theArrows were too tough with the Lads losing 68 to 49.On February 12 the Quarry Lads played host to the Hymera Shakamaks. This was the first meetingbetween the 2 schools in the schools history. The Shakamaks, sporting 4 returning regulars for alast year, including 6 4 Carl Bose, was too much for the smaller Quarry Lads winning 66-60. Bosefinished the night with a 26 point performance.On February 19, Smithville came to Stinesville for the last home game of the season, to take homea 60 to 50 victory.February 20, the Lads traveled to Stilesville to play Emenince. The game had been postponed fromFebruary 11 because the Emenince Gym burned. The Eels won 66 to 48.The Lads drew the tough Unionville Arrows for the Sectional Tourney. The Lads put up a toughfight before bowing out 51 to 44. The Arrows continued through the tourney and got beat 47-43by Bloomington in the final game.GaikatltaUThe B Team completing a successful season, enjoyed winning 12 out of 18 games. The teamstarted out at a fast pace winning six games in a row before their first downfall.Leading off with a close win over Ellettsville, then taking Paragon, Gosport, Helmsburg, Unionville, and Monrovia. With the moving of the stellar forward, Charles Keller, and guard EddieEllett to the varsity, the B team found the road rough, losing their next 2 games to Morgantown andSmithville (overtime) before gaining their poise enabling them to win their next 5 games, whichwere Helmsburg, Lyons, Ellettsville, Gosport, and Coal City. The Tri-County vacation seemed tobe a handicap for the little Lads, winning 1 of their last 5 games. The win was over Smithville,and the losses were to Solsberry, Unionville, Bloomington, and Eminence.46
