*wQuarry LadsThe Quarry Lads journeyed to Ellettsville on the night of November 2, 1954 to start the longrough road of an 18-game basketball schedule. The Quarry Lads, without the services of anyreturning regulars from last season, found themselves in a rebuilding situation which took long hoursof hard practice. The Eagles, with 3 returning regulars in the lineup proved too much for the youngQuarry Lads to handle. The Eagles pulled away in the final minutes to win 54-42.With only 2 days to work out the mistakes, the Quarry Lads entertained the Paragon Panthers onNovember 5, 1954 which found the Panthers clawing their way to an overtime victory 67-64.Stinging from 2 losses, the lads traveled to Helmsburg on November 12, 1954, to find theveteran Helmsburg squad too rough to the tune of 53-58. The promising thing of the game wasJack Bowman collecting 25 points for the second game in a row.In a low scoring contest at Gosport on November 16, 1954, the Lads fought an uphill battleto push in front by 1 point with 20seconds showing on the clock, only to taste defeat in the lastseconds of the game.After losing 3 close games by an average of 3 points per game the Quarry Lads lost to Monroviaon their floor 66-55, Morgantown 73-53. John Stewart began to come into his own at Morgantown,leading both teams with a total of 21 points for the game.On December 10, the Lads journeyed to Ellettsville to play the rival Smithville Skibos. Thecontest was a close one with the tall Skibos winning at the free throw line 61-57. John Stewart tookscorinq honors for the second night in a row, scoring 19 points.One week later, the lads entertained the Helmsburg squad at home without the services of highscoring John Stewart, who was home with the flu, and found themselves losing 54-44.On December 21 - the Quarry Lads, stinging from nine setbacks, exploded against the Lyonsfor their first wi n to the tune of 68 to 28. The game at Lyons was the first meeting between thetwo schools in the schools history.The Quarry Lads took a rest over the Christmas vacation, and came back to school January 3 toprepare for the second half of the basketball season.The Ellettsville Eagles invaded the Lads goal house on January 7, 1955 to take home a 57-34victory. The lads got started off on the wrong foot against Ellettsville only to come back on TuesdayJanuary 11, 1955 and curb the Gosport Indians severely by a 77-49 count. Stewart and Purcell ledthe attack with 25 and 19 points respectively.45 |
